Sort – everything into boxes/containers according to what needs to be done: file , shred, recycle , refer, toss, etc. Process the paper – take the items you sorted into boxes and put them where they belong: filing, your tickler or reading folder or delegate/refer to a more appropriate person, etc.

I keep mine in an encrypted Word file on my computer. I also have an encrypted file with various other important numbers like my and my husbands social security numbers and the like. Servers are usually backed up daily, so your file will likely be restored. However, you probably want to password protect file.

We all take holidays and when we are gone someone needs to fill in for us. Do as much filing as you can, but if you are unsure, leave it in a folder for the assistant to do on their return. I thought putting together a few Do's and Don'ts would help. Do change the initials on correspondence you type to your initials.
