IAAP, Yahoo and Air Travel

Laughing all the Way to Work

I am a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). As part of my membership I get a subscription to IAAP's magazine OfficePro and also to their e-newsletter OfficePro Express. Both of these are excellent sources of information for the administrative assistant. I thought I would pass on something from the e-newsletter because this week there was a link to a Yahoo article with a list of 20 Tips from Air Travel Insiders.

IAAP EFAM: Familiar Faces

Office Dynamics

More to come on my exciting time at IAAP EFAM - stay tuned! It's funny how many great assistants I have met over the past 19 years in training and development. It was a great pleasure for me at yesterday's event to see many faces from my past and even from my own community. We caught up with each other, laughed, took pictures, and just had a good time. I have been so fortunate to meet and work with great admins like Terri, Connie, Ruth B, Dawn, and Cindy just to name a few.

Office Dynamics

I was lucky enough to participate in our IAAP AZ-NV-NM Division Annual Meeting in Tucson over the weekend and I must tell you that the quality of administrative professionals there blew me away. I was at the super market this Sunday and I passed by this box of cereal and thought to myself – “Man, if there was only a way that by simply eating a bowl of those daily made you a star life - it would be so great!” It’s not that way though, is it?

Some bosses just don't know how to work with an admin

Laughing all the Way to Work

IAAP have an article on their website about how to work more effectively with an administrative assistant that I suggest would be a good start for a conversation with your boss. Have you ever worked for someone and they under-utilized you or just didn't seem to know how to work with an assistant? I once worked for a young boss and you could tell he wasn't quite sure what he could give me or what I was capable of doing.

The other night I went to a fundraising event that IAAP [1] were participating in for our local childrens' hospital called Trees of Hope. IAAP's tree was decorated with things like CDs, pens, large paperclips. This is not my favourite time of year. Between adjusting to the time change, going home in the dark and the colder temperatures (especially up here in Canada Brrr!) it can be a pretty dreary time. I am finding I am tired and that is being reflected at work.

At our local IAAP chapter dinner we heard a speaker from an etiquette protocol company Savoir-Faire and she suggested that it was very important to go to the office party because it was more about protocol and networking and how you are viewed as a team player than socializing.
