As part of an internal research initiative centered on this topic, SmithGroup’s Workplace Practice convened panels of Gen Z employees in Detroit, Michigan and Chicago, Illinois to learn more about the personal and professional goals that drive this generation. As such, they want more out of their workplace than a standard cubicle.

Even knowing what someone’s office looks like, how tidy they keep their desk and what pictures fill the walls of their cubicle, can provide a level of comfort. The goal is to meet as normally as possible, even though you’re potentially miles—or even oceans—apart. Working with a virtual assistant does have a learning curve.

The first thing that you need to know is that Skype for business is compatible with other Skypes users and also people that aren’t using the app via phone and free web app. Within the text window, you can select your preferred means of communication.

Our lives are increasingly hectic and we are bombarded by so much stuff on a daily basis that learning to be productive, so as to handle the stresses of modern life, is a wise move. Projects wouldn’t be moving forward and my goals and plans would be lagging behind… or so it seemed.

The thousands of people who were left shaking in their cubicles -- wondering if they'd receive the next pink slip -- reminded me of the old saying that there are no atheists in foxholes. Playing Angry Birds on your smartphone instead of returning phone calls promptly won't help you get ahead. But times are improving, if slowly.

For me, one of the great things about Twitter is that is allows me to learn more about what people experience at work every day. I feel like I can jump from cubicle to cubicle across the world, being a fly, er, spider on the wall. They know that they’ve got to meet goals or they start chopping heads. Thanks for posting.

If you have an open-door policy, place your back to the entrance, or face away from your cubicle entry to indicate your unavailability. When placing calls, respect the time of other employees by immediately asking if you have phoned at a convenient time or should call back later. Keep the office door closed.
