I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to temp agencies. So I left that temp gig and went to work for the CEO.

You care less, you’re easily annoyed, you start to do a cost-benefit analysis, you feel resentful, and you feel short changed. State you’d love to be an EA and learn so much you can be promoted to coordinator, director, manager. This is one of the main reasons why I endorse temping and working thru recruiting and placement agencies.

I'm really interested in progressing and developing my skills but feel that managing the office is hindering my ability to focus on the core of being an EA. In your case, she may have been able to influence the SVP, CEO, HR, or the other assistants because she is in charge of all admin and it’s her duty to manage them. And part of that is managing up - bringing things to their boss' attention and up the chain it goes. Bosses usually ask themselves themselves: How manageable is an employee?

And as I was working, job hunting and/or temping, I had to find other sources of happiness. I would rather go to a pilates studio that has classes late at night that fits my work hours vs going to a gym that only costs $30 a month. So, I manage my life so I ONLY job hunt for the RIGHT job when I absolutely need to look for a new job.

Rules for being a good hiring manager/interviewer: 1. It may cost you some time in the beginning, but it will save you in the long run when job seekers tie up your phone lines or e-mail asking, "Did you get my resume?" I always hear that temp work is a good way to get experience, but wonder if HR ever cares about it.
