I knew four of the eight assistants as they had been in my workshops in the past and I coached one of them one-on-one. Her seat was right up front at a square table with three other admins.

We did a number of things: free video training series leading up to a tele class promoted via social media, email; jv partners helped us to promote; and. It didn't engage my personal strengths, put me in an environment in which I was not mentally challenged and I was not able to enjoy those business activities with which I thrive.

Join a class at your fitness club, an exercise group or a team sport. Find a mentor. Create an environment fostering your success. Also, consider your environment—is your home or office dreary or energizing? Ask questions of mentors and peers. Take a dance or fitness class. Make a commitment to fitness.

However, even after taking many classes on the various programs I still haven’t gotten any new tasks. It’s such a shame that there aren’t more managers who are good mentors that help each individual grow and learn more in their roles. We discussed it at length and I “have” my boss’ support. I mentored other younger assistants. Outside of work, I started to take classes at night (and even on the weekends). On Monday nights I went to hula class. Once that ended I took pole dance class, ballet, mat pilates, and various other classes I had never tried before, but always wanted to.

Constantly you should be having interactions and it should just be a never–ending process of learning and growing and getting better and building relationships and having interactions, and that’s the type of environment we want to promote. They’re still mentors. We have some employees that do that. They still do a great job.

They probably came from a blue collar or middle class family. Most of my bosses could talk politics, the environment, current events, and tech. The sheer hours of mentoring I received from this person was unmatched. Many of my other bosses were also from “regular” and also Ivy League schools. This boss was relatable.

Achille says she’s “frustrated” with some professors “who are trying to be friends and not mentors” to students, and believes that schools should offer “an MBA of life course” to help students understand that in the workplace “there are boundaries.” Perhaps the newly hired employee should be mentored a bit more by his/her boss.

For bigger changes, enlist a mentor or professional coach to help you stay on track. I practice yoga once or twice a week and know that I always leave class feeling more grounded and centered than when I started. To help you move through it I recommend leaving the environment that is overwhelming you. Obliterate Overwhelm!
