I think to myself, “How are you so sure everything is going to stay the same until you retire three or four years from now?”

Maybe your awful boss will retire and you’ll be promoted and the company will be purchased by Google. Email this to a friend? If you’re in a career that’s making you miserable, it’s probably safe to say that things can’t change enough to make it worthwhile staying. Maybe they can. But I like to encourage a proactive mindset.
