I’ve had more mentors than anyone I know. Without a father in my life, I grew up hungry for advice — which gave me a reason to make my relationships with mentors more personal and more meaningful than the average mentor-mentee relationship. Mentors tend to be older than you and work with other older-than-you people.

The main reason I started my business in the first place (way back in November 2001) was so that I could have a flexible schedule – I had two young children at the time and needed to have a very flexible schedule that would allow me to be around for them, particularly during school holidays. You will get there much faster.

Give your manager reasonable estimates of what your team can achieve and keep him or her informed of major issues or delays which come up. A good people leader is always willing to mentor and assist their team members. Set boundaries. Get support.
