In amongst all of my files and paperwork I discovered a handful of my old covering letters for various jobs I had applied for over the years (one was hand written – that is how old I am!). I wondered how many of us still write covering letters when we apply for jobs?

Just as you target your resume and cover letter for a certain job, you should do the same for your references. You want someone who can speak to some of the skills sought in the position, such as creativity or leadership. Look for variety. Try to look for those who have worked with you in different areas.
