While waiting for the birthday girl to return I settled into one of the many sofas in the library room and waded through the million emails I had been neglecting. During the week the hotel is very much a conference and event space. I loved sitting underneath the cloisters and I thought the setting for the restaurant was fantastic.

Located in the Galleria area of Houston the hotel has 485 bedrooms and 50,000 square feet of function space, including 23 conference and break out rooms not to mention the ballroom which can accommodate up to 1,000 people. I arrived before my room was available so decided to sit in the lobby bar, check my emails and people watch.

We had borrowed a friends flat just up the road on Argyle Street which was great but lacked a fundamental and very necessary component – WiFi, which meant that most days were spent locating the best place to work, answer emails and generally know what was going on in the world.

Once the boss is settled into the hotel send them a reminder email detailing the hotel amenities and any local information that might prove useful (weather, good restaurants, nearest public transport). If there is a large time difference schedule an email to go out at the end of their day with any information or updates that they need.

Everyone who works in and around London knows the ExCeL London Exhibition and Conference center. ExCeL London is big, as you would expect from a venue that hosts global conferences and exhibitions. There are plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, hotels and pubs all within the campus so guests are very well looked after.

I waited in the bar for my keys and was able to grab a drink, log on to the WiFi and check my emails all in a comfortable and cozy part of the hotel. It didn’t hurt that a local rugby team were also relaxing in the bar! The hotel itself is a little dated but it is clean and comfortable.

Networking at a conference does little good if you never speak with the person after the event. If you meet someone at an Administrative Assistant conference, for example, make sure to follow up with that contact within a week or two after the event. If you discussed a need at the conference, be sure to address it.

I save “food profiles” of each individual for each restaurant. Save emails and details I very rarely delete any emails. I will work at a company for 4 years and have emails archived from my very first year that I’ve had to look back at for handy information three years later.
