The Green Hat People have also organised a free seminar at All Bar One on Bishopsgate (London) on Thursday 21st April to show assistants how to improve results at meetings by making them much more fun and interactive!

I held a training seminar and Committee meeting on the day that the second planned terrorist attack occurred in London in 2007. When I call a restaurant, I ask for a reservation first and if they say they are too packed, I respond in an almost embarrassed tone and say the following. “Oh. He really loves your restaurant and wanted to have a dinner meeting there.” I went to eat at that same restaurant on my day off one day and brought a friend.

I save “food profiles” of each individual for each restaurant. The degrees of separation are very few and they’ve met each other at conferences, retreats, seminars, and grew up with them at university or at the same companies when they were younger. So at least be familiar with all the key players, even if it’s just their name.

As wonderful as online learning can be, going to a live conference or seminar with other assistants is something that you should try to do a few times a year. All you need is to put some time aside and close your door, or put some earphones on, and plug into your computer and learn. I think I am just not used to having to think about me.

I also learned at a "Working Smarter with Microsoft Outlook" seminar that we should not use e-mails as urgent requests. I had a situation a couple of years ago where I had replied to an e-mail that I had mis-read and that caused a bit of kirfluffle (not sure how spell that). This little tip has been a huge time-saver for me.

Who said it was smart to give a one-hour free seminar, speech or workshop almost every single day? I’m glad my blogging fame doesn’t interrupt my trip to the zoo with the kids or a candlelit dinner at a fine restaurant. Everyone wants to be seen as generous and selfless. Who said we were supposed to do that?
