Even when a company is downsizing or merging, there’s a lot of opportunity for contract roles or temp gigs to help them thru the transition. When you job hunt keep this in mind. Try to set up the communication of the office so your boss checks their own emails and responds, but you are in charge of all the mtg coordination, phones, and anything that happens in the office. If you are out sick, a temp will have to sub for you. The goal is to have at your fingertips information you will need at a moment's notice.

I was stressed out from the pace of work and also the length of a couple of special projects with a long lead time. We also get a mini break when our boss is traveling as the stress level is generally lower and we can catch up on our workload.
