Of course, it could simply be that workers saved more during the pandemic and can now afford to retire in comfort earlier than planned. Surprisingly, the silver exodus is not concentrated in the richest segments of society – even though one might expect that they would be the most able to retire.

Read a few pages of interesting book, take a creative community education class, plan a day trip with your camera, schedule a spa day join a small group (writes, artists, entrepreneurs, parenting, etc.), Whether you plan to retire from your chosen position or working toward another goal you can choose the attitude you bring daily.

Work part-time, have a challenging and consistent volunteer position, continue to take classes for certification, return to school, or start your own at-home business. The goal is to have something to write on your resume to show you weren't professionally stagnant.

And due to outsourcing, Boomers not retiring, and Gen Yers being told (by older generations mind you) to get degrees in their "passion" or that "any degree" is a path to success.you end up with a lot of overworked, underpaid 20somethings. Anonymous has some valid points (with a side of bitterness, however understandable).

I was taking fun classes and learning new hobbies at night once or twice a week. This admin person was at least twice my age, maybe more, and a few years away from retiring. I really wanted it because it was during an economic bust when millions were out of work and I’d learn a lot of new stuff so it’d improve my resume.

Many freelancers don’t have to send their resumes to people anymore, so those degrees don’t see a lot of action, but they’re there, collecting dust on our walls. Look at the names of the classes you chose to take. Figure out what interested you most about every single class you ever took. Remember what you did in them.

It also looks bad on one’s resume. I would rather go to a pilates studio that has classes late at night that fits my work hours vs going to a gym that only costs $30 a month. Take an online class and study at work. And I had to debate with myself if it was worth staying in a job that was pretty great, but not amazing.
