Only so my resume would get past hiring managers. While I have some college background, but no degree, I was overlooked during a promotional process for not having a degree – of any kind. Classes have helped a lot. Do you think that having a university degree helped you get your PA role? Yes – but only partially.

In the early days, he would open the phone book and call every theater and dance company in the city to promote his drop-in classes. Now his classes sell out. Most hung up on him.

It says a lot when your boss wants to grow you within the company and promote you. I also knew everything I was feeling was very true for me, but also confusing because if my boss didn’t need me, I wouldn’t have a job, I wouldn’t get a paycheck, and I wouldn’t have all this experience to put on my resume.

Believe it or not, some assistant jobs actually prefer you have an Ivy League degree even if they ask for a career assistant or to promote them up the chain.

Ask your boss for opportunities to train in other departments, or to attend seminars or classes at a local university. Update (or build) your resume.

Many freelancers don’t have to send their resumes to people anymore, so those degrees don’t see a lot of action, but they’re there, collecting dust on our walls. Look at the names of the classes you chose to take. Figure out what interested you most about every single class you ever took. Remember what you did in them.

It also looks bad on one’s resume. I would rather go to a pilates studio that has classes late at night that fits my work hours vs going to a gym that only costs $30 a month. Take an online class and study at work. Mainly because through those layoffs I got a promotion, whereas I would have just happily stayed on the EA route.
