We had our unusual badges and gifts and a group of speakers that knew the audience inside and out with many of them working as Assistants currently or at some point in their career. We had workshops dedicated to event management, presentation design and document management.

This trip was part birthday gift, part Christmas escape, part Florida homecoming. We’d watch Christmas movies and wrap presents. She thought that doing something different, something lighter on gifts and heavier on togetherness, would be good for us. There weren’t as many presents as a normal Christmas, but they didn’t notice.

After dinner, my wife had broken off to wrap presents, so I adjourned upstairs to accept my son’s challenge in a fierce game of Super Mario Kart 8. I’m going to read fewer books in 2017. I received How to Read a Book as a gift in a book exchange this year, and it is the first book on my reading list starting January 1.
