I am guest posting on IAAP's Capital Chapter blog site so I wanted to say hello in case any visitors head over my way. I have been keeping in contact with the newly elected President in Washington (of IAAP that is) over the last year and she asked me to write a post on being a legal assistant.

Everywhere you go…there’s somebody new to learn to know! The great thing is that networking is a “soft skill” that can be learned by anyone. Being a member of IAAP is a great place! Bring business cards to an event or IAAP meeting, and set a goal to get or give a certain number before or after the meeting. Where you work.

Nancy Fraze works as a Legal Assistant for Chevron. and is Poet Laureate for the Town of Danville, and is a frequent contributor to the Northern California Chapter of IAAP. What will I get to do?

I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

I had a big learning curve going into it and I didnt know any of the other assistants so I felt all alone with my challenges. Below are some things that I have found helpful to build my network: Join a professional association such as the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). We can all help each other.
