Along with our multiple work passwords, we have a password for our home computer, and if we sign up for Facebook, Twitter or any other website, we have another password to remember. At one office I worked in we had a mail cart with slots for everyones mail, but it was filed First name, Last name. I grew up in a world that used Last Name, First Name (i.e. the phone book, standard filing practices etc.) This goes for filing and also how your contacts are ordered in Outlook. When a meeting is finalized, I put the scheduling sheet in a completed file. I tend to keep my scheduling sheets in chronological order and each morning I go through them to see if there is any action I need to take, i.e. follow up to ask for an agenda or see if I can start scheduling. This is useful if you want to file the email and change the Subject line to something that better describes what the email is about or to put notes in the email. I think Tasks is one of Outlooks best-kept secrets, but it shouldnt be and is a great way to follow up on items. So how can we know what we dont know?

Tried and True Method: I set up 12 hanging file folders labelled January through to December. I then put the items in a two-fold file folder with his calendar printed out on the one side and the items he will need for the day on the other side. The system I use is quite simple and has been around for a long time.

I can hardly keep up with my own e-mails at times let alone someone elses account, but that is part of my job. Get any files they may need as a result of the e-mail correspondence. If you pay attention to what is going on in their Inbox, you will not be taken by surprise when things come up. Very good article Patricia!

In some organizations raises are tied to how well you do and it is also a record that is kept on your personnel file. Normally, I put something about needing to get my filing system up to date, but I think I may have missed the point when I have done that. I have had great experiences learning online in interactive courses.

It is actually the same bring-forward system that I learned in high school, back in the 1970s, but in all my career had never needed to use until now. I use hanging file folders labelled from January through to December. I do use Outlook tasks, and one of my recurring tasks is to check the bring forward file for the next day *laughs*.

Ctrl + Home moves the cursor to the beginning of the open file or document and Ctrl + End moves the cursor to the end of the open file or document, but if you are in the middle of a document and want to select everything from there down, press Ctrl + Shift + End or if you want to select everything from there up, press Ctrl + Shift + Home.
