You bashed monsters by hitting keys on your keyboard whilst wondering if you could hook up a nodding bird à la Homer Simpson. I love that I get emails and comments telling me that a blog post came at just the right time. Griffin – Drool and keyboards don’t mix. But I managed to finish the project by self-discipline.

Sure, it’s great to hit the snooze button and give yourself an extra hour of R&R once in awhile, but before you know it, you’re getting up at noon and puttering around before you answer your customer emails. How do you manage to get anything done?! It’s all too easy to fall into bad habits, starting with procrastination.

It’s fun, but it’s not like I sit at my keyboard, occasionally throwing my arms into the air and squealing, “Wheeeeeee! Weird I’ve never heard of you Josh, how the hell did you manage to fly past my radar at 6’8 while carrying around your huge metal balls? “That’s what I want.” I’m writing!” Thanks Dude!

DO NOT look at a single work email after that. Your quick email check becomes a written response, some analysis, and finally that little voice says, “What the heck. It’s really easy to get sucked in to one more email and lose an entire evening. You have plenty of time left for that client. I might as well just do it.&#

His emails are usually brief, casual, and mention something like, “Have a nice weekend,” or “Hope everything’s good with you.” So it was weird to get an email that was so stilted and formal that it sounded like it was written by the Queen of England’s chamberlain to someone she was too polite to outright call a waste of space.
