One of the problems with e-mail is that not everything needs to be acted on right away, but if you don’t have a good reminder system in place, then you’re likely to let things slip through the cracks. In a nutshell, it turns *ANY* e-mail client into a reminder system. Stage Two Labs recently launched a new service called Nudgemail.

There are 5 key advantages to maintaining a to-do list: 1) A to-do list doesn’t forget Your brain is not the most efficient memory tool and will only trust systems that it knows works. From there you can prioritize them and tackle the important ones first. To-do lists, shopping lists, idea lists, etc. I have loads of them.

One other observation: the better you’re maintaining your system day-to-day, the smaller the impact of unexpected absences. Generally, with a planned absence, I have put systems in place to catch, reroute, defer, etc. It may take time and effort to get things reorganized to move forward, but don’t stop at the end of step four.

If you use a filing system for your to-dos, create folders numbered from 1 - 31. Try to complete tasks that need your attention within 2 - 3 business days. Otherwise you will start to fall behind and clients/staff members will start asking whats going on. Then place each task into the corresponding day that you need to complete the task by.
