As assistants we don’t need to reinvent the wheel – if we have a great network of other assistants we can ask others how they have done things, if they can suggest the right supplier or put you in contact with a great hotel. Being able to pick the brains of other assistants in a similar situation is so incredibly helpful.

I was on the receiving end of sexist, negative comments from male supervisors, and I learned that the majority of women earn 82 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. People are often shocked to learn I don’t have a debit card. I watched my female friends accept jobs that paid far less than they were worth.

Learn about how your company structure affects pay. Salary and bonuses are taxed differently to dividends. If possible, get some advice from your accountant regarding the level of pay you plan on taking from the business. Research the going rate for CEOs in your industry. Don’t pay yourself too much or you will harm the company.
