I’ve used all of these methods at one time or another when the events of an email gone wrong or some other item of note has me off my game. Often I’ll do the dishes or tidy up around the house in order to get my mind in a place where it can start to tackle the work challenges once again.

His emails are usually brief, casual, and mention something like, “Have a nice weekend,” or “Hope everything’s good with you.” So it was weird to get an email that was so stilted and formal that it sounded like it was written by the Queen of England’s chamberlain to someone she was too polite to outright call a waste of space.

A fool takes in all the lumber of any sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or is at best jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has difficultly laying his hands upon it. Alright, well, I know he emailed me to let me know I had a broken link in a post. And I know he was interested in what that link led to, which made me think well of him, so I emailed him back. In less than 5 emails, in fact. This is perhaps my most important rule of thumb, whether writing books, blog posts, or emails.

You bashed monsters by hitting keys on your keyboard whilst wondering if you could hook up a nodding bird à la Homer Simpson. Hey, I’ll spent all evening hitting some buttons so that a number in a database somewhere slooowly goes up.) I stare at the screen, watching the well of words dry up. It was called grinding.
