She relieves me from things I don’t need to be doing like email, booking travel and project planning. Even knowing what someone’s office looks like, how tidy they keep their desk and what pictures fill the walls of their cubicle, can provide a level of comfort. Those subconscious signals evaporate in an online-only collaboration.

I work for a magazine and we hire freelancers for all sorts of reasons. Think of it this way: You can only do so much and getting a helping hand will get those extra tasks completed when the need to be completed – on time and right the first time. You only have to hire a freelancer for the jobs that need urgent attention.
