Managers need to engage employees in conversations and get them to open up about their concerns. Provide positive feedback.

It was a horrible, stressful time, but it seemed to bring out the best in us. Gossiping, backbiting and negative campaigning dominate the airwaves, and we seem to mimic that behavior at work. Of course, much of that is due to the enormous stress in both our private and professional lives.

There are some steps to take when you feel you're getting caught in the middle of a cubicle tiff and you want to handle it as professionally -- and maturely -- as possible. Ask simple, neutral questions about concerns, but steer the conversation away from gossip and just ask for facts. Don't despair. Ask questions. Ask questions.
