In amongst all of my files and paperwork I discovered a handful of my old covering letters for various jobs I had applied for over the years (one was hand written – that is how old I am!). I wondered how many of us still write covering letters when we apply for jobs? Do they want someone with events experience?

2023 grads are entering a job market that is not so quick to employ new grads. This is a shift from the past two years where companies were fiercely competing to recruit interns and recent graduates. Although the U.S. Attend networking events, engage on LinkedIn, and join relevant groups or associations.

It’s a given though, that as the years have gone by that they have obtained more experience, and been exposed to greater responsibilities, as they’ve developed internally. Be upfront in your cover letter. But I know that this is a generational thing that can be hard for the older generations to grasp.

At first blush, my pride flared up and my internal Vanessa started to craft a sassy retort to the gentleman about the awesomeness of my resume, yada yada. Event planning could also figure into that category. General, but true and perhaps better than just saying that I helped lead a customer-facing event, period.

In interviews I’ve said that I’ve worked for introverts and extroverts and my job is to conform to the needs of my boss. This means when you show up for the interview you are courteous to everyone. Your interview starts even before you shake hands with anyone or answer an interview question. Luckily, I did!
