While broader CSR goals may include progressive hiring policies, working with suppliers equally committed to sustainability and energy-reducing, greener windows and HVAC, these are not initiatives where most employees can participate. Involve them in charitable causes such as food and clothing drives. Lead by example.

What they don’t like is having only one supplier. Manhattan would be an example and various other cities in the US where people have really been very reluctant to go back and work in the center of town. If we were just to go bang and collapse completely without a rescuer then this could be quite serious in some locations.

Recently the Northface clothing company, a high end organization of outerwear was singled out by one of the humane organizations for purchasing and using duck down for their coats and vests that had been purchased from a company who participated in the especially cruel practice of raising ducks for foie gras.

Can you provide an example from your book of a leader (or two) who provides some great advice in keeping workers motivated and engaged? I think NBA legend Oscar Robertson is a great example. We don’t allow our people to berate the suppliers. I asked Eckberg recently about his book and the people he interviewed. We don’t shout.
