Having the opportunity to hash it out with another assistant is a great resource. When you leave a job, you dont have to leave your network behind.

I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

It works better if you have a whole pool of resources with different strengths to call upon. The Human Resources Director pointed me to a small office and I was left alone to read what must have been 200 pages. Be kind to your new hires and available to answer their questions and help them learn the ropes. Albeit, I do the introductions first (50+ people to meet) and then start with first-thing-in-the-morning tasks.
