Lately I've been poking around online trying to see what else is out there for self-branding and job hunting. I enjoy doing this and it helps when I volunteer or make suggestions to those I'm mentoring or friends who ask me questions. It has paid off where I got a phone call or an interview.

How do I get a recommendation letter from my boss for a new job hunt without raising suspicion or improve my situation without my boss’ help? It’s such a shame that there aren’t more managers who are good mentors that help each individual grow and learn more in their roles. HR will usually call 2-3 people for a quick phone chat.

Hochwarter over the phone. And I do understand that money does not buy happiness, etc etc, but we do heroes, mentors and models of good behavior. Those of us who have been in the workforce for a longer period of time owe it to ourselves to help them, mentor them and encourage them. I would love to see it myself.

Don’t automatically assume because the package looks good or the job sounds great on paper you will like it. Job hunting and dating are very similar. Many times, when people see their dream job, they go right to marriage and commitment. It’s very hard to know what anyone is like after meeting them for an hour.

Find a mentor. Ask someone you respect and feel you really connect with for feedback on what you’re doing with your career or in your job. Or, you can ask a professional organization about helping you find a mentor who can help guide you through some career issues. Pick up the phone. Take the high road. I love #10.

Because I knew nothing about the job except my title (EA) and the dept (I think it was in marketing). And I had a lot of temp work coming my way, I had a lot of interviews about to be booked, I had just started my job hunt, and I had so many unanswered questions. So why forego a full time job for a 2 year trial?
