Alternately, you could say you only had X amount of dollars in your wallet and give that, offer to write a check, or give your own gift by baking cookies or something.

I actively grow my LinkedIn network every week, if not every day. When I hear about a company that interests me for any reason, I look for people who work there to add to my network.
