We started an online education company, which has exponentially multiplied our ability to reach people in ways in-person events and seminars never could. Equally true: The gifts are always there. But you can train your brain and your instincts. I find the straightest path out of chaos is to ask yourself: What’s the gift?

Working together can mean cross-training for out-of-office coverage and expansion of what the team together can accomplish that one person alone cannot do. Sharing expertise, mentoring and offering to cover for your colleague during their vacation or for a medical emergency, are all great contributors to peer synergy.

Find a mentor. I’m working on taking time off for visits, but in the meantime I’ll reconnect the old-fashioned way by writing, sending cards throughout the year; little gifts the family might enjoy, too. Ask questions of mentors and peers. Attend training. Take stock and charge forward. Why didn’t I win them last year?
