On the phone. Phone conversations can make it easier to connect with others. Still, some people have a really hard time communicating by phone. A great tip I received early in my career was to smile while talking to someone on the phone. I hated talking on the phone, but I always seemed to have jobs that required it.

Here are a few suggestions: Always start out with a FAQ. Begin the process as soon as possible, and if you don’t have an immediate solution, then follow-up with an email or phone call as soon as you do. Take steps to resolve the problem in the future, but do something to assuage the anger and frustration of the customer.

Answer the phone now and then. If you turn white and get all knee-wobbly at the thought of picking up the phone and introducing yourself to a prospective client, keep your day job. Over the holidays, my husband had paid time off and I was still typing away. You sit at a desk. It’s pretty laid back.

I think that was also the day when I started to use my app as an excuse for not going out or as a standard answer at the phone. I also added a Help and FAQ section. Felt somehow special and fancy, mainly because of the name of the new framework: Quartz Core. No more arguing or negotiating, I just started to code it. Loads of bugs.
