I had just spent 2 months travelling around a freezing USA and although back in the UK my body was still a little cold, a little jet lagged and in serious need of some rest and relaxation. Similar to a lot of spa hotels the Nutfield’s Cloister restaurant offers a three course meal (£38 per head) as part of the weekend package rates.

At first the consultants picked their own hotels and put the cost through their expenses and as you can imagine their choice of hotels varied wildly and so did the price. Generally the apartments do not provide additional facilities such as a gym, restaurant or spa. My director gave me the task of reducing this spend by 20%.

I travel far to try and find a full-serve station, but they are becoming extinct. It was expensive,but when I brought it home I had to do all the work to get it up and running. Now, there doesnt seem to be a difference in price at all, it is just common practice that we have to do it ourselves. Recently, I bought a new laptop.

Make sure that tasks directly associated with clients come first, consider the financial impact of a project and its completion date on the company, don’t let deadlines control the priority list (expense reports can wait when there are more important tasks), and consider cause and effect (do A to enable B, which accomplishes C).

So we have challenges, for example, that the HR team can launch. So we did it by team. So teams got to know one another, they got to get more active. I was traveling, so different time zone, different pillows and et cetera, and I had to make a choice to sleep 1 hour more or go to the gym. There are only travelers.

We ate at an Italian restaurant called Il Violino on Columbus Avenue which was very nice, although we did have a slight run in with the waiter who thought we had not tipped enough, despite it being 20% of the bill! We then headed down to Time Square for the evening, it was crazy busy as you would expect on a Saturday night! Yum on a bun!

But we really have made the world a lot smaller with the pandemic and the prevalence of tools like Microsoft, Teams, Slack and Zoom.
