Consider keeping a spreadsheet with key details like the client name, project title, how much you were paid, and how much you set aside for taxes. Proving that you paid taxes on all of your freelance income, not just what was reported, can be helpful if you’re ever audited. This makes it easier to follow up on any outstanding invoices.

Consider the expenses you incur in these areas: Rent/Mortgage: If you rent or lease an office space, be sure you can easily cover that, and any additional fees that are involved (maintenance, snow removal, etc.) Most VAs work from home offices. In essence, it is a benefit you are providing for yourself.

" That is what I heard from her as we were talking on the phone. Since I work at home (and because we're full-time RVers, always on the road), I need to be able to fax/copy/convert from anywhere. But I live and work in less than 200 square feet -- so I don't have the room for a lot of equipment. OK!

The IRS e-help desk phone number is 866-255-0654. If the work is sporadic or project-based (and if the worker has the freedom to take on other jobs of a similar nature), they’re a contractor. Home office expenses include printer paper, ink, and toner. Don’t tinker/modify any company-provided equipment.
