But for the purposes of this article, we’re just going to use the general term of professional portfolio. Your professional portfolio should contain a combination of these things: An updated copy of your resume.

So if you went travelling for six months, then you need to spell that out. But if you leave it off then you need to replace it with something else (travel, working on your own business, caring for a family member etc). Be upfront in your cover letter. Now whatever gap you have on your resume you need to account for.
