She said that new assistants are mentored for the first year of their working career. They work initially as an assistant-in-training and report to a senior assistant for mentoring and help with anything that comes up on the job. Because of this mentoring program they had no problem hiring young assistants right out of college.

Everywhere you go…there’s somebody new to learn to know! The great thing is that networking is a “soft skill” that can be learned by anyone. Being a member of IAAP is a great place! Bring business cards to an event or IAAP meeting, and set a goal to get or give a certain number before or after the meeting. Where you work.

We had an incredible webinar event with over 1,300 assistants registered to learn more about why, as an administrative professional, they should consider a career certification. We have listed each speaker and what the attendees will learn. You can get the designations that Brenda mentioned from IAAP which are the CAP and OM.

What I have learned as a blogger Blogging about your career is an excellent way to present yourself to a potential employer. I have gained confidence in what I do from reading and writing about it. Those with experience can share what they know -- things you would never learn in school. I got the job by the way.

Yes, we can learn from these professionals and they can motivate us and give us insight and tips, but they can’t tell us how to do our job. Some people have the expertise, but don't feel confident enough to write. I started out wanting to write an article on mentoring. One of us may be great at organizing a conference.
