Roti, Kapda aur Makaan” (food, clothing and shelter) was the political cry of independent India’s socialism in the 1960s and ’70s (including a Hindi film with the same title). But the cynical manipulation of the system by a select few dented his idealism. I walked in with two bags of clothes and an open mind, ready for new ideas.

No matter how “right” that thought may look like in my own internal values system, if it triggers feelings of anger, revenge or fear, it’s a negative thought. To use Jonny’s example, less chocolate cake is not necessarily a bad thing — it could help a person create a healthier lifestyle. If yes, that’s a negative thought.
