Several years ago, I found myself in a position at a company that was facing budget cuts. A possible response could be – I will utilize any downtime researching professional development opportunities such as free or low-cost webinars, training, conferences, etc. My hours were reduced and benefits lost.

If the situation is to change, then EAs need to participate in the assertion about what assistants do and the responsibilities they now hold. Ask for an annual training budget and make your case for why a particular training program is useful for your role. That dollar figure will more than cover the cost of certification.
