During my residency, at the recommendation of my mentors, my thinking deepened when I spent more time talking to colleagues on park benches and when I went for a swim in Walden Pond. And many of the ideas in my books have come from daydreaming, too. With daydreaming, you feel more in touch with subtle elements of who you are.

When I met my mentor Mr. Shoaff, I had been working for six years. If your story ever gets in somebody’s book, make sure they use it as an example, not a warning. Read all the books by and about people who have accomplished great things. With good books and programs, you can “tap into the treasure of ideas.”

I learned how to use Pro Tools, how to record myself and how to EQ [equalize] my vocals a little bit from Simeon Viltz and another mentor who passed away, Brother Mike Hawkins,” he says. “That was a really, really big part of me gaining my fanbase….
