My suitcase was packed, my traveling clothes all laid out. There, we’d spend the holidays together, as a family, without the overgifting and overdecorating and overeating of a typical Christmas. My mom tried to help by encouraging me to like stuff that other girls my age liked: clothes, boy bands, teen magazines.
