He started with his wife, Dawn, and has been doing it alone since her death in 2014. In the ensuing weeks and months, the wheelchair-bound Leeuw traversed a dizzying network of hospitals, outpatient centers and nursing homes. He has taken in terminally ill children who are in the L.A. foster care system for over 20 years.
