Sure, it’s great to hit the snooze button and give yourself an extra hour of R&R once in awhile, but before you know it, you’re getting up at noon and puttering around before you answer your customer emails. It’s all too easy to fall into bad habits, starting with procrastination. For starters, institute a schedule and stick to it.

It’s fun, but it’s not like I sit at my keyboard, occasionally throwing my arms into the air and squealing, “Wheeeeeee! Not from a ‘Hey, people listen to me, I should sound like I know what I’m talking about’ train of thought; it’d probably be more to do with ‘Oh god, can I really do this? I’m writing!”

DO NOT look at a single work email after that. Your quick email check becomes a written response, some analysis, and finally that little voice says, “What the heck. It’s really easy to get sucked in to one more email and lose an entire evening. You have plenty of time left for that client. I might as well just do it.&#

His emails are usually brief, casual, and mention something like, “Have a nice weekend,” or “Hope everything’s good with you.” So it was weird to get an email that was so stilted and formal that it sounded like it was written by the Queen of England’s chamberlain to someone she was too polite to outright call a waste of space.

This is where bloggers get a head start: if you have a blog, you have a good reason to put fingers to keyboard on a regular basis. It’s all great training. I don’t know who wrote them and why they thought they had the right to sit before a keyboard and litter the Web with, um, substandard writing. Reply Go ahead.

No matter what the topic is, before you put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, be sure that you have the qualifications to write about whatever you are about to share. People like me often have extremely broad knowledge of a number of subjects in which we don’t have formal training. If not, move on to something else.

What follows is me thinking into my keyboard. If the objective is training in a specific subject, some of these would work better than others. Is the goal training? Training is something a lot of people can easily see spending money on, because there’s such a definite return. Sorry if it’s long and messy.
