I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

A manager has to have confidence that you know how to do your job. I just did not have confidence that this person was going to be able to assist me. I always have more confidence something will get done when I see it being written down. Here are some reasons I think managers can get possessive: Im not sure I can trust you.

From writing that article I had confidence to take a job that required me taking minutes and it has turned out fine. I will not say I am the perfect minute taker, but it is something I now have confidence in doing. Writing on a subject you know nothing about is a good way to learn something about that particular topic.

If you are a new hire, take the time to learn and ask questions. I always feel more confident when a new hire asks me a question and gets all the information before proceeding. The first months on the job are a learning and growing experience. Take advantage of this time to learn as much as you can and ask, ask, ask.

I feel confident as I check off each item that things will be done on time. I had a notepad and pen with me so continued the minutes by hand, but it was a lesson learned to check in the bottom right hand corner of my computer to see if I actually have power. No surprises! I can honestly say that even though it was a hard time to go through, I ended up getting a much better job and a better opportunity and can look back on it as a good learning experience. Be selective and go for the job that is the right fit and that you have confidence you can do. The same can be said for employees.
