Anticipating a medical leave, Lá Shawn Sandifer crafted an administrative procedures binder to ensure continuity in her absence. I was preparing to go on medical leave and would be gone for at least eight weeks. As a result, she felt more confident about covering for me. I do not know of any document like it in the association.

What have you learned about the administrative profession from running the awards? I think the biggest thing I’ve learned about the administrative profession is that administrative professionals are a rare combination of so many unique attributes that you don’t often see all in the same person.

Be confident. To be able to network, you must have confidence. You need confidence in yourself, confidence in your abilities, and confidence in your networking skills. One thing Ive learned over the years is that an arsenal of compelling stories and anecdotes related to my career can be extremely useful.

I read something that made me pause, but because I was in a big hurry and felt confident that the other person was covering that base, I let it go. I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

A manager has to have confidence that you know how to do your job. I just did not have confidence that this person was going to be able to assist me. I always have more confidence something will get done when I see it being written down. Here are some reasons I think managers can get possessive: Im not sure I can trust you.

From writing that article I had confidence to take a job that required me taking minutes and it has turned out fine. I will not say I am the perfect minute taker, but it is something I now have confidence in doing. Writing on a subject you know nothing about is a good way to learn something about that particular topic.
