Olympia loved that at the beginning of the movie, the women could be seen as the beloved and well worn Southern female stereotypes – preoccupied with gossip, clothes, hair, flowers, and food. The script was about the friendship of women. These women are steel magnolias – beautiful and soft on the outside and tough on the inside.

When we left off with Mad Men, Joan, played by Christina Hendricks had manoeuvred herself all the way from Office Manager to the brink of a fortune. I like colour in work clothes but go for powerful reds and jewel tones, no baby pinks. Sorry to say it but if you want to transform from PA to Leader, gossip is a big no.

I love that every outfit is planned and is given a name so that it can be archived correctly, if only we had that many clothes! If you think of how much confidential information, gossip and scandal she must have been privy to over the years I can only imagine what stories her biography would contain.

Luckily, in my office, we dress in casual clothes all of the time and we do have a corporate policy of being able to dress up in a costume for this event. Check with your Human Resources Department or manager to see if this falls into your corporate policy. You dont want to end up at work and be the only one wearing a costume.

What I discovered is a time saver and e-mail management tool that is a best-kept secret. I have written previously that to manage my work e-mail better I asked friends and family to send e-mails to my home rather than work. You will notice your Inbox will be less crowded and easier to manage.

A full-time writing job is a great starting point for advancing into management jobs where you can start earning real money. Dress in comfortable clothes (I recommend Hawaiian shirts). But then there’s multi-tasking and time-management. I have to admit that freelancing can get a little lonely. Smoke breaks with friends.
