Working with recruitment agencies. Dealing with agencies – hum, this is tricky. In my experience there are some terrible agencies out there that will treat you really badly and will put you forward for jobs that are totally unsuitable for you. The agencies will only call you if your CV has passed their keyword algorithm.

Every person is unique, and every company and job is unique. Job hunting isn’t that different from dating. Avoiding the “unhappy at work&# syndrome can be solved in a few simple pro-active steps especially if you don’t get bogged down in the discomfort and fear of the minutae along the way.

You care less, you’re easily annoyed, you start to do a cost-benefit analysis, you feel resentful, and you feel short changed. When you job hunt keep this in mind. This is one of the main reasons why I endorse temping and working thru recruiting and placement agencies. When you do things for money, it shows.

After only 2 weeks, I found a great company through a staffing agency and the position was full time working for a wonderful CEO. I did very well on my interviews and it's down to me and one other EA who already has a full time job. Because I knew nothing about the job except my title (EA) and the dept (I think it was in marketing).

I found every single one of my jobs through a temping agency or by referral. I learned through informational interviews that I should apply to temp agencies. You may only land your job thru a friend and word of mouth from anyone that will take a chance on you as you transition. Time is a zero sum game.
