Despite being offered a six-figure salary, I politely declined. Because being respected and valued at work is more important than a high salary. Yes, a high salary may provide me with the opportunity to have a cushier life. So you may be thinking, “Does offering training really counterbalance a less than stellar salary?”

As enlightened as I think I am on issues around discrimination, I learned a great deal from speaking with Spencer, Aaisha, Melba, and several other Black colleagues who preferred to remain anonymous. After negotiations with one organization, I ended up agreeing to the initial salary offered (knowing the position called for considerably more).
