The main reason I started my business in the first place (way back in November 2001) was so that I could have a flexible schedule – I had two young children at the time and needed to have a very flexible schedule that would allow me to be around for them, particularly during school holidays. And to also know that you are not alone.

And so, after reading an article in Office Secretary Magazine, I became a Virtual Assistant in November 2001. One of the policies I’ve created for my business over the years it to cut back on my schedule during the boys’ summer vacation. I got carpal tunnels syndrome/tendinitis in 2000 & 2001 because I didn’t have good ergonomic advice, & didn’t take any initiative back then to seek it out. Though less focus on my hands and more about keeping from blowing out the voice by keeping relaxed while singing my brains out !-)

And of course, now we’ve really all adopted this notion that it’s okay to be kind of physically around others that are not part of your organization. And that, I think, is what a lot of organizations now are using to drive their workplace strategy. I came away from that, and this is colored for sure by the.com bust in 2001.
