I read something that made me pause, but because I was in a big hurry and felt confident that the other person was covering that base, I let it go. I am not sure if it would have changed the outcome, but at least I would feel confident that I flagged it for my boss. Lesson learned and will now put me on high gut alert.

A manager has to have confidence that you know how to do your job. I just did not have confidence that this person was going to be able to assist me. Make the interview count and ask the right questions. Ask yourself what things really matter to you and ask questions to bring those things up in the interview. Hire smart!

I have been on some interactive sites where assistants ask questions and get answers and I learn from them as I have some of the same questions. Lunch n learns are also a good way to learn from each other. Administrative newsletters or bulletin boards where you can post tips or suggestions is a good way to learn.

If you are a new hire, take the time to learn and ask questions. I always feel more confident when a new hire asks me a question and gets all the information before proceeding. The first months on the job are a learning and growing experience. Take advantage of this time to learn as much as you can and ask, ask, ask.
