Sign up with the major job hunting sites with your resume and profile, join social network sites geared towards work, and meet with every temp agency in town just to be safe. From what I've heard, the assistants did leave with class and their dignity intact. Be the bigger person and don't gossip! You will die trying.

Ask your boss for opportunities to train in other departments, or to attend seminars or classes at a local university. Attend an event or sign up for an online class that really challenges you. Always look for ways to expand your horizons and be able to show an employer how you faced a challenge and learned. Take the high road.
