E-mail is no longer just for personal use, with all our accepted short forms: LOL, U, GB and a co-workers favourite, OMG! If I didn’t know the person, and it was my first communication to him/her, I would use both names: John McDonald. They were merely doing their job and didn’t need to be thanked.
