Not long ago, I got an email asking for advice. This person was negotiating a new contract to host a podcast. But this email really rubbed me the wrong way. Unless you were on a Zoom together last week or shared Thanksgiving in 2019, assume that the person you’re emailing does not know who you are or remember you.

No-Fly Zones are the non-negotiable time constraints that employees now have as part of their lives – deal-breakers of a sort. The biggest difference in the workplace of 2023 compared to 2019 is that hybrid work is here to stay. People have their No-Fly Zones. The pandemic created a work environment that was unprecedented.

I talk with thousands of assistants and managers who think they are communicating with each other because they text or email each other all day. This is not communicating.

More often than not, the contracts are fairly straightforward: you negotiate the job you have to complete, and how much the company will pay you. That’s not to say there’s no room for negotiations but in typical situations, it’s about a flat fee. These agents are also able to negotiate on your behalf. And that’s a good thing.
