It can be quite a daunting task asking assistants to negotiate corporate rates with hotels. But assistants can save their organisations a lot of money if they negotiate a special rate with local hotels, particularly if many of their colleagues or clients stay overnight. Be prepared to negotiate if necessary. Like everything in business, it’s about negotiation for both funds and time. On the day I reverted to ‘show and tell’ and picked up the annual catalogue of restaurants for both of my bosses which greatly impressed them. Will the request tie in with one of your appraisal goals?

It is easy to negotiate on the price per night with a serviced apartment as they do tend to discount on block bookings. If you have negotiated a deal whereby you make advanced block bookings there is the possibility that you will miss out on those last-minute deals with other hotels and serviced apartment providers.

From the selection phase, going through the interview and negotiation phases, all seemed incredibly familiar. It’s located close to my home town in Romania, near Ocnele Mari and it has a church, a football field, some restaurants and playgrounds. Not for me, but it was part of the consulting contract.
